Tanzania<\/a>\u00a0has granted\u00a0Australia<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Magnis Resources<\/a>\u00a0approval for a\u00a0graphite processing plant<\/a>\u00a0in a designated special economic zone (SEZ) to process graphite mined from the\u00a0Nachu mine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The SEZ is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Industry, Trade and Investment, and is not subject to the changes in the\u00a0mining<\/a>\u00a0legislation promulgated last year.<\/p>\n

The SEZ licence for production of value-added\u00a0graphite products<\/a>\u00a0is the only such license to be granted in\u00a0Tanzania<\/a>, which is pushing for the implementation of large\u00a0projects<\/a>\u00a0that will add value to the country\u2019s economy and development.<\/p>\n

Following the introduction of new\u00a0mining<\/a>\u00a0sector legislation in\u00a0Tanzania<\/a>\u00a0during the second half of 2017, Magnis has continued to progress discussions with the government regarding the development of the\u00a0mining<\/a>\u00a0and processing\u00a0projects<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Those discussions led to Magnis submitting a proposal outlining that the entire Nachu processing plant will operate under a 100% subsidiary, Magnis\u00a0Technology<\/a>Tanzania<\/a>\u00a0(MTT) in the SEZ licence area, with the\u00a0products<\/a>from the SEZ continuing to be advanced\u00a0graphite products<\/a>that can be made using Magnis\u2019 proprietary\u00a0technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Magnis is also the parent company of Uranex\u00a0Tanzania<\/a>.<\/p>\n

MTT will own and operate 100% of the company\u2019s processing plant at Nachu under the laws applicable to the SEZ under the\u00a0Export<\/a>\u00a0Processing Zone Authority (EPZA) with the objective of promoting investment in\u00a0Tanzania<\/a>.<\/p>\n

MTT will initially produce refined jumbo and super\u00a0jumbo flake products<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0spheroidal graphite products<\/a>\u00a0for the lithium-ion battery market, while Uranex will operate under the laws and regulations applicable to the country\u2019s\u00a0mining<\/a>industry under the Ministry of Minerals.<\/p>\n

President\u00a0John Magufuli<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has set\u00a0Tanzania<\/a>\u00a0on a firm path towards\u00a0industrial<\/a>\u00a0development, with the processing of\u00a0industrial<\/a>\u00a0mineral ores at the top of the industrialisation agenda. In this regard, EPZA CEO\u00a0Joseph Leon Simbakalia<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>said the authority had been mandated by law to play the critical role of promoting and facilitating the establishment of SEZs to host minerals ore beneficiation industries linked to a\u00a0value chain<\/a>\u00a0of associated downstream industries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to announce with Magnis that Industry, Trade and Investment Minister\u00a0Charles Mwijage<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>who is also EPZA\u2019s chairperson, already signed to endorse amendment of the\u00a0Magnis Resources<\/a>\u00a0Export<\/a>\u00a0Processing Zones made under Government Notice Number 221 of 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to working closely with Magnis by way of facilitation and assistance that will enable execution of this exciting\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0in optimum time; with the introduction of new technologies to process graphite, as well as the development of new skills for Tanzanians,\u201d said Simbakalia.<\/p>\n

Magnis chairperson\u00a0Frank Poullas<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0said the ongoing support provided to us by the Tanzanian government crystallised the value of the Nachu\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0and established MTT as an\u00a0approved graphite processor<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Tanzania<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to progressing development at Nachu and bringing considerable economic and skills benefits to\u00a0Tanzania<\/a>\u00a0through the development of the mine and the processing\u00a0operations<\/a>\u00a0through MTT,\u201d Poullas added.<\/p>\n
